Maseru, 28th February - The 7th Annual Econet Golf Day, held today in Maseru, has once again proven to be a powerful platform for corporate philanthropy, raising over M1 million for support towards young people in Lesotho. Since its inception in 2018, this prestigious tournament has raised over M4 million in support of Higherlife Foundation Lesotho, the social investment arm of Econet Telecom Lesotho.

This year’s event reaffirmed the company’s commitment to transforming lives through strategic social investments. Addressing the esteemed guests, Econet’s CEO Mr. Dennis Plaatjies expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from corporate partners and stakeholders, emphasizing the life-changing impact of the funds raised.

“The Econet Golf Day is more than just a game – it is an opportunity to collectively invest in Lesotho’s future. Every contribution made today directly impacts a young scholar’s journey, empowering them to become future leaders who will drive our nation forward,” said Mr. Plaatjies.

A highlight of the event was a heartfelt testimony from a Higherlife Foundation Lesotho beneficiary, Ratalane Fusi, who shared how the support of Higherlife has transformed his life for the better, granting him access to quality education and unlocking opportunities for a brighter future.

On his part, the Minister of Education, Professor Ntoi Rapapa, also acknowledged the immense contributions made through Higherlife Foundation Lesotho’s scholarships and other learning interventions such as such as Akello Smart Learning. “ I am happy that through these scholarships and support, close to 6000 students are pursuing their dreams at various educational institutions – From High Schools in Lesotho, colleges in Zimbabwe, South Africa and eSwatini to Universities in the United States.” he stated.

Speaking at the same event, Her Majesty the Queen commended Econet and its partners for their unwavering dedication to education and youth empowerment. “It is through collaborative efforts like these that we can create a lasting impact in the lives of many young Basotho. Investing in education is investing in the future of our nation,” she said.

With this year’s pledges, Econet remains steadfast in its mission to support initiatives that empower young minds, ensuring that no deserving scholar is left behind. The Econet Golf Day stands as a beacon of hope, proving that when business and philanthropy align, extraordinary impact is made.
