Lioli FC crowned Econet Soccer Spectacular champions 2019
Earlier in June 2019, Econet Telecom Lesotho working in partnership with the Premier League Management Committee launched the second edition of a pre-season tournament dubbed Econet Soccer Spectacular (ESS).
The tournament was first introduced as a pilot in the 2018 pre-season window where four Econet Premier League teams that were voted into the competition by the supporters battled it out to become the debut champions. And the same approach was followed in the 2019 ESS tournament. The principal inspiration behind ESS is to help local premier league clubs to raise funds that will support them to resume their league obligations as they start a new season. It is the supporters and the fans that are important in generating these funds for the tournament, through their votes and match attendance.
Initially, Econet Telecom Lesotho had offered a 40% share of revenue generated from SMSes which was increased to 50% when votes reached half a million.
Additional to the revenue generated from ticket sales and 50% revenue from votes, the 4 participating teams still pocket their share of M200, 000 where the winner gets M100,000, second runner up takes M50,000 while the third and fourth share M50, 000 equally.
The total money generated at the end of the tournament and shared by all fourteen Econet Premier League teams’ less Econet administration and product costs, since the tickets were bundled with Econet Sk’haftin recharge voucher, amounts to M715, 550. The ESS champions, Lioli FC entered the tournament with votes worth nearly M73, 000 and took home, 30KM away from Maseru, M164, 201 and a trophy. A team with least votes valued at M22 received M19 only.
It is only the top 4 teams that walked away with more than what they brought into the tournament because of the prize money. The tournament took place on the 31st August and 1st September 2019 at Setsoto Stadium.
The third and final season of the Econet Premier League begins on September 14, 2019.
