Econet Telecom Lesotho launches Social Payments App, Sasai
Maseru: Econet Telecom Lesotho has partnered with Cassava Fintech International to offer Social Payments services on Sasai. Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) is one of the ﬁrst partners of major Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) across Africa to successfully integrate and offer social payment services on Sasai. Cassava Fintech International (CFI) is Sasai Social Payments platform provider and is headquartered in the United Kingdom. CFI has partnered with MNOs in Lesotho, Burundi and Zimbabwe and based on current engagements with multiple MNOs, it plans to extend markets and MNO partnerships across Africa on an ongoing basis with the aim of having up to eight markets going live by March 2020.
CFI launched the Sasai platform on 23 July 2019 and the platform is accessible globally through Google and Apple app stores. Since the release of the platform, Sasai has become popular Social Payments platform and it unlocks ﬁnancial inclusion and services for millions of people who are already on social media platforms but needed to make payments and enjoy multiple services in one place. The ﬁnancial services landscape has been transformed in Lesotho through EcoCash mobile money services, one of the Econet group offerings. The advantages to Econet Telecom Lesotho is that its active customer base will immediately enjoy using Sasai, including the convenience of having an array of services all in one place, efﬁciency for payment services such as purchase of airtime and data; paying billers and merchants, send or receive money from a friend.
Econet Telecom Lesotho’s Chief Executive Ofﬁcer, Mr Dennis Plaatjies said that “the launch of Sasai in Lesotho through ETL marks the entrance of social messaging apps into the mobile money payments system. We will continue to lead the innovation agenda for the beneﬁt of our customers. Sasai is EcoCash and a whole lot more put together. Imagine the ability to have individual or group chats (instant message, audio and video calls), transfer money to other people and between banks, making payments at merchants, borrowing money and playing games all in one platform without having to log in and out like we do with some of the existing apps!”. He further added that “ETL was primed to witness a positive uptake of Sasai and this would bring increase value added services for the customers”. This initial launch of Sasai in Lesotho will include Pay, Chat and Explore as the key features. Under the Pay feature, the customer will be able to instantly link their ETL EcoCash Wallet and start making transfers and payments. The Chat feature will enable users to keep in touch with friends and family members, interest groups, professional network and the service providers all in one place. The chats can be done through instant messaging, audio and video calling. Through the Explore feature, Sasai users will explore diverse products and services from all service providers under one roof. Users will access array of offerings such as individual and group savings, investments, credit, gaming, music and other streaming and much more. “It is this rich basket of features that attracted ETL in a bid to increase value to its customers and embrace the digital trends” said Mr. Plaatjies.
The initial release will have EcoCash mobile wallet linking and payments, chat, voice and video calling to allow users to familiarise with the new app and its bedrock features. Post launch, there will be scheduled monthly releases which include queued additional features such as micro-credit, overdraft and onboarded service providers such as DSTV. “Since Sasai is not a network-locked platform, each and every customer using an internet capable device in the country will have access and enjoy social interactions and the convenience of converged payments which are normally offered by different companies through various Apps. This makes Sasai an All-in-one App to Pay, Chat and Explore” said Mr. Plaatjies.
